After rupture of membranes, the previously sterile uterus of the woman becomes prone to pathogen invasion leading to infection. This is an emergency situation even though it starts only from a local infection because as it progresses, there is a higher risk for sepsis.
Management:
• Culture and sensitivity (C&S) must be done.
• Practice universal precautions and aseptic technique when handling patients.
• Increase hydration.
• Administer antibiotics as ordered.
• For patients with endometritis, position client on high back rest or encourage ambulation to prevent pooling of infected lochia and promote drainage.
