Pregnancy at Risk: Hyperemesis Gravidarum

  • Also termed pernicious vomiting
  • Nausea and vomiting that is prolonged past 12th week of pregnancy
  • Assessment date:  signs and symptoms of dehydration

-    diagnostic studies show electrolyte and acid-base imbalances
-    increased hematocrit due to hemoconcentration secondary to dehydration
-    how much?

  • Management guidelines:

-    NPO on first 24 hours of hospital admission.
-    Then infuse approximately 3000 mL of IVF such as Ringer’s lactate with added vitamin B.
